Do any of you remember in 2012 and 2013 that we reported a potential problem with dog treats? Well we finally have some resolution. It was initially chicken and then sweet potato dog treats made in, or containing ingredients, from China. Then we had bacon jerky and recently duck jerky that the owner claims killed her dog. Symptoms may show up within hours or days after a treat is eaten and include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and increased thirst and urination. If you’ve fed your dog any jerky treats made in China and your pet has fallen ill, I recommend you contact your veterinarian – especially if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours. According to NBC News, in January of this year, the New York State Department of Agriculture informed the FDA it had found trace amounts of residual poultry antibiotics in several lots of dog treats. The New York agriculture agency discovered very low levels of four drugs not approved for use in U.S. poultry, and one antibiotic approved for use, but for which the amount allowed is strictly limited. A nationwide class settlement was reached on May 30, 2014 between a group of consumers and Waggin’ Train, LLC and Nestle Purina PetCare Company. If given Court approval, the agreement would resolve disputed claims related to Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch dog treats made in China. The settlement creates a settlement fund of $6,500,000, and establishes procedures that would permit consumers to submit claims for monetary
